COVID-19 Update: State tops 160,000 cases; Allegheny County sees uptick with 106 new positive tests

A total of 18 new virus-related deaths are reported in Pa.

Pennsylvania topped 160,000 cases of COVID-19 on Thursday with another day of more than 1,000 new cases and 18 more virus-related deaths.

With 1,156 new cases, Thursday marks the fourth day this week the state has had a 1,000-plus daily increase in cases, bringing the statewide total to 160,123. 

Of the newest cases, 246 were reported in Western Pennsylvania. Allegheny County had the largest daily increase in the region with 106 new cases, followed by Cambria County with 26, according to health officials.

The latest positive cases in Allegheny are from 913 tests administered between Sept. 26 and Sept. 30. Among the newest cases, 99 are confirmed and seven are considered probable cases because they come from antigen tests. The age range of those tested is from 11 to 101, with a median age of 44.

The county has a total of 12,454 people who have tested positive for the virus. 

Of the 18 latest deaths statewide, only one occurred in the Pittsburgh region, in Beaver County. Allegheny’s death toll remains at 382, with no new deaths reported Thursday. The state has a total of 8,160 virus-related deaths.

The state health department is reporting that there are currently 558 people —  53 in Allegheny County — hospitalized for the virus.

Between Sept. 18 and Sept. 24 — the most recent data — the state health department reported Allegheny County having a positivity rate of about 2.9%. The state’s positivity rate from that period was about 3.2%.

Here is the total number of positive cases reported Thursday in Western Pennsylvania:

• Allegheny: 12,454 (up 106 from Wednesday)

• Armstrong: 452 (up 4)
