Routine maintenance at UPMC McKeesport hospital uncovered a “small amount” of mold behind some walls, a UPMC spokeswoman said Tuesday.
The mold was discovered behind the walls of four unoccupied hospital rooms on two adjoining floors. In a statement, the spokeswoman said the mold was contained behind the walls and barriers were used during maintenance, so no patients were exposed. Moreover, no mold-related illness was reported.
“Air quality testing confirmed that it is contained and remediation is underway,” UPMC said, adding that the state Health Department was notified as a matter of routine. “The rooms will remain closed until the remediation is completed.”
“Safety is our top priority and our patients, staff and visitors can be assured that UPMC takes this issue seriously,” the statement said.
