Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh announces updated COVID-19 protocols

The Diocese of Pittsburgh announced updated COVID-19 safety protocols on Friday, citing a dramatic surge in cases of the omicron variant.

According to a public statement, all priests, deacons, and choir members must wear masks during Mass at all times, including when preaching and at the altar.

Ministers of Holy Communion, servers, greeters, ushers, lectors, cantors, faith formation leaders, and catechists must also wear masks.

“As Christians and community members, we have a responsibility to protect ourselves, each other and our neighbors,” the statement said.  “When we all follow these steps, it will slow this virus, help us keep our churches open and move us toward the day when can once again associate with others more freely.”
