Neville Township informed residents Tuesday night that they should not drink or use the water coming out of their taps.
Township officials said an industrial water meter recorded a backflow of about 2,000 gallons into the water system.
The content of the backflow was not immediately known, but there is a threat of contamination.
Because the content of the backflow in unknown, boiling, freezing, filtering or letting water stand is not recommended.
The township is urging residents to use bottled water or alternative sources for drinking, bathing, hand washing, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, coking and food preparation until further notice.
Water will be available at the Neville Island Fire Department at 5300 Grand Ave. on Neville Island.
For more information, the township can be reached at 412-264-1977.
