Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey announced a new education coordinator who will work to create better outcomes for city youth.
Alexis Walker, 26, was named to the position Monday after the city received a $175,000 grant from The Heinz Endowments.
“Her background and experience will help us continue to build on our partnerships with Pittsburgh Public Schools and will help us build pathways into prosperity for students across Pittsburgh,” Mr. Gainey said in a statement.
In her position, Ms. Walker, of the North Side, will build a strategic partnership with Pittsburgh Public Schools to remove barriers and deliver high-impact services and initiatives to students. She will work with the city’s assistant director of public safety to create safety improvements for kids as they head to and from school.
She will also coordinate and maintain a job pipeline from the PPS Career Technical Education Program to the city as part of Mr. Gainey’s Pathways to Prosperity Initiative and the Prepare to Prosper partnership with Pittsburgh Public.
A Pittsburgh Public Schools spokeswoman did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
Ms. Walker, a Robert Morris University graduate who is pursuing a master’s degree in education policy and leadership from American University, previously served as the GirlGov Program Manager at The Women and Girls Foundation.
There she helped launch the GirlGov summer leadership academy, connected teens to elected leaders to share their voices and was the lead facilitator in helping teenage girls develop skills around advocacy.
