Pittsburgh Public Schools board president Sylvia C. Wilson has announced plans to run for her third term on the board.
Beginning on Feb. 6, Ms. Wilson will begin her reelection campaign with a virtual meet and greet with her supporters over Zoom at an event called “For the Sake of Our Children Discussion.”
Ms. Wilson, who was first elected to the board in 2013, calls her campaign a “grassroots effort to make the Pittsburgh Public School system a community hub for education and a service to the students and their families.”
With her next term, Ms. Wilson said that she will work to provide more opportunities for high school students who plan to attend higher education or enter the workforce through technical and specialized employment, according to her reelection announcement.
“Each day, I will continue to fight to make the school system work for all of us,” Ms. Wilson said in the announcement. “I will continue to work to expand early college programs … I pledge to never lose sight of who I serve and why I serve.”
Prior to her election, Ms. Wilson taught in various schools in the Pittsburgh Public School system for 26 years.
In 2019, Ms. Wilson was elected as board president, and in 2020 she was elected unanimously by board members for her second term.
As the policy-making body for the School District, the board was involved in creating COVID-19 guidelines that followed advice from the Pennsylvania Department of Health, as well as allocating the money the district received from the Federal CARES Act, according to the board’s website.
The upcoming primary election will take place on May 18. Ms. Wilson represents District 1, which includes schools in Homewood, East Hills, Friendship, Larmier, Lincoln-Lemington and Regent Square as well as parts of East Liberty, Shadyside and Point Breeze.
Board members Terry Kennedy, Cynthia Falls, Veronica Edwards and Sala Udin will also be up for reelection. None of them has announced their intentions yet.
