Carnegie Mellon University is moving back its first week of in-person spring classes by an additional week, calling it an added precaution given the prevalence of COVID-19 cases in Allegheny County and beyond.
Under the change, class delivery will be remote-only through Feb. 12, with face-to-face instruction now slated to begin on Feb. 15, spokesman Jason Maderer said Tuesday.
The first two weeks of instruction for undergraduates and graduate students will be online
“This change from our original plan is an added precaution as we begin the semester given the elevated prevalence of the virus in the Pittsburgh region,” Mr. Maderer said. “Research activities will proceed consistent with approved return to campus plans.”
A number of public and private campuses in the Pittsburgh region have modified aspects of their spring calendar as they track infection rates and ponder state advisories that say January and February could be difficult months.
Last week, Carnegie Mellon announced that it now has resources enabling it to offer weekly testing to all students and employees coming to campus.
