Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice David N. Wecht on Tuesday announced that he placed himself under self-quarantine after coming into contact with his son, who has a presumptive positive case of COVID-19.
Others in Justice Wecht’s family also were exposed, including another of the justice’s sons who may have come into contact with classmates at Fox Chapel Area High School while picking up items from the school on Monday.
Justice Wecht’s son, a Georgetown University student, returned home to Fox Chapel last week from studying abroad in Spain, according to Dr. Cyril Wecht, Justice Wecht’s father.
The justice's son was tested for COVID-19 after developing some mild symptoms upon his return, and the results came back late Monday indicating that he had a presumptive positive case.
Following medical advice, Justice Wecht placed himself and his family under self-quarantine.
The test results, however, came back after the other son had already gone to the high school to pick up some belongings. Before he went to the school, that son had been in contact with his brother who tested positive for COVID-19, according to the district.
Classes in Fox Chapel were canceled Monday, as they were at all districts after Gov. Tom Wolf ordered a statewide shutdown of K-12 schools last week amid the coronavirus pandemic. But students were allowed to retrieve belongings that day between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., according to the district.
Justice Wecht’s son went to the school between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and he may have come into contact with other students, the district said.
The district said school officials are in the process of identifying and attempting to notify any students who may have come in contact with the sibling on Monday.
A district spokeswoman did not respond to a question about how many students may have come into contact with Justice Wecht’s son.
The district said it did not receive information about Justice Wecht’s son until Tuesday.
