Extra police will be on hand and other heightened security measures in place today at Pine-Richland High School and Middle School after a “specific” cyber threat closed the schools the day before.
Students will be subject to a general search, and no backpacks and other bags are allowed when students return to the schools.
Students have been told they could use clear plastic bags to carry books, lunch and other items. Instrument cases were being permitted but would be searched.
Police officers from the Northern Regional Police Department will remain at the school throughout the rest of the day, district officials said.
The threat prompted the school district to close both schools Wednesday and cancel all after-school activities.
The Northern Regional police completed a “threat assessment” and the canine unit was brought in to conduct a sweep of both buildings and the stadium, and all were secured, district officials said.
Superintendent Brian Miller said the investigation continues. The district asks that anyone who may have specific information on the threat should contact the district tip line at 724-449-TIPS.
“The cyber threat received by the district constitutes a terroristic threat in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The district will pursue charges to the fullest extent of the law,” Mr. Miller said in a statement.
