All students at Pittsburgh Faison K-5 school, in the city's Homewood South section, will now pass through metal detectors on their way to class after a kindergarten student was found with a handgun Monday.
Ebony Pugh, Pittsburgh Public Schools spokeswoman, said the gun, with the safety on, was removed from the student without incident by a school bus driver after school was dismissed. The gun was in the student’s backpack.
“A student alerted the driver that a student was in possession of the weapon,” Ms. Pugh said in an email statement issued Tuesday morning. “The driver quickly confiscated the weapon and turned it over to school staff. School staff then reported it over to School Police and submitted a Childline report.”
School police are investigating how the student came into possession of the gun. ”Information related to specific charges are not available at this time,” she said Tuesday morning.
Ms. Pugh said parents were notified of the incident via the district’s phone system yesterday, and told that starting Tuesday all students will be required to go through the school’s metal detectors.
Prior to the incident, only adult visitors and parents at Pittsburgh Faison were required to pass through the metal detectors.
