Woman killed by truck in Oakland was Pitt employee

Police said she was struck by a box truck while crossing Darragh Street

A woman was killed when she was struck by a box truck early Thursday morning in Oakland was a University of Pittsburgh employee, a Pitt spokesman said Friday.

The 37-year-old victim, Jessie Maroney of South Park, was found in the street at the intersection of Terrace and Darragh streets near UPMC Presbyterian about 5:45 a.m.

She was taken into the hospital and pronounced dead a short time later.

Ms. Maroney was an employee at Pitt, said Jared Stonesifer, senior director of external communications at the university. According to Pitt’s website, she was a member of the Biomedical Science Tower’s housekeeping staff.

“The City of Pittsburgh will lead the investigation with the full support of the University,” Mr. Stonesifer said in a statement. “We extend our sincere condolences to the victim’s family, friends and colleagues. Resources are available to support University of Pittsburgh community members, including Life Solutions for faculty and staff at 1-866-647-3432 and the University Counseling Center for students at 412-648-7930."

Pittsburgh Public Safety said investigators believe she was crossing Darragh Street in a crosswalk when she was struck.

Authorities said police found the vehicle — a 2019 Freightliner box truck — later Thursday morning. About 2 p.m., they had also located the driver, who was “fully cooperative” with police.
