A man was shot and killed in a midafternoon shooting Thursday in front of a busy Downtown Pittsburgh light rail station.
The shooting happened about 2:15 p.m. on Liberty Avenue, directly across the street from the Wood Street T Station. The man, identified Friday morning as 23-year-old Eugene Nance of Pittsburgh, was shot multiple times.
Two suspects were detained a short time later across the Allegheny River on the city’s North Shore. Police briefly sealed off a parking garage not far from PNC Park to search for suspects.
Two men were taken to police headquarters for questioning, investigators said, and three guns were recovered.
Erique Collington, 18, of the Hill District was charged with homicide, conspiracy and firearms offenses. No one else had been charged as of Friday morning.
Cmdr. Matt Lackner said it was not clear what precipitated the shooting but noted that the normal afternoon crowd was out and about on the streets Downtown.
The Wood Street station is a transit hub, housing a light rail stop below ground and a number of bus stops outside.
One woman said she was close to where the shooting happened and thought she heard around seven gunshots.
“He was just standing there and they shot him up, right next to the trash can,” said the woman, who declined to give her name. “They didn’t care about anything going on [around them].
“It’s complete violence,” she said.
Four schools in Downtown were put briefly on lockdown, but it was lifted a short time later.
