A Pittsburgh Police detective who was part of a chase connected with a homicide struck and critically injured a suspect who was on foot with the detective’s vehicle Monday afternoon.
The Public Safety Department said that around 2:40 p.m., multiple police units were in pursuit of a vehicle involved in a recent homicide. Authorities did not say which homicide but Post-Gazette news partner KDKA-TV said it was connected to a weekend killing in Carrick.
The vehicle being pursued crashed at the BP gas station on Route 51 at the base of Duquesne Heights. Four males, including two juveniles, fled on foot, and one adult male was struck by a detective’s car that was involved in the pursuit. The man was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
“Per protocol, the detective was also taken to the hospital for evaluation and testing,” according to a news release.
The three other men were captured and taken to police headquarters.
The Allegheny County Police Department will investigate both the initial pursuit and the injury incident, according to the release.
The city will continue the investigation related to the homicide.
Early Sunday, police were called to the 100 block of East Agnew Avenue in Carrick around 6:45 a.m. for reports of shots heard.
A man found unresponsive on the street was pronounced deceased on the scene. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office on Monday identified the victim as Jacob Dienert, 21. It did not provide a hometown.
