A known car thief from the Hill District was indicted this week on a count of stealing an FBI vehicle last year in Schenley Park.
Lashawn Norwood, 57, was charged under seal in federal court on Tuesday with theft of government property in stealing a Ford Explorer belonging to the FBI on Sept. 28, 2021.
At the time of the theft, the FBI reported that a bureau gun had also been stolen and agents were seeking the public’s help in finding it.
Norwood is not charged in connection with the gun.
The theft case was unsealed Thursday and a magistrate judge ordered Norwood to remain jailed pending a detention hearing next week.
The FBI would not answer any questions about the case and the indictment is sparse on details.
Norwood has a history of stealing cars and stealing from cars, among other offenses. In 2013, after leading police on a chase, the Pittsburgh police auto squad said they had been seeking Norwood on charges of stealing Subarus and stealing from Subarus, his car of choice.
Court filings show Norwood has a record for auto theft, theft from a motor vehicle, receiving stolen property and other crimes from various incidents dating to 2010.
