The cause of death for a man who died in the hospital after collapsing in the Allegheny County Jail was released on Tuesday.
Gerald Thomas, 26, died of a bilateral pulmonary embolism, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office.
The condition occurs when one or more arteries in the lungs become blocked by a blood clot.
The ACME said the death was of natural causes.
On March 8, Mr. Thomas collapsed around noon, shortly after exiting his cell.
According to Jesse Geleynse, a spokesperson for the jail, a medical emergency was called and lifesaving measures were performed until paramedics arrived.
Mr. Thomas was transported to UPMC Mercy hospital, where he died at 12:33 p.m.
Mr. Thomas is the second ACJ inmate to die this year, and the eighth since July.
