A third Pittsburgh police officer has died of COVID-19, the city’s Department of Public Safety announced on Tuesday.
Sgt. Timothy Werner, 49, of Pittsburgh died Tuesday morning at UPMC Mercy hospital from the virus “with members of his Pittsburgh Police family by his side,” according to the statement.
Sgt. Werner, who was entering his 22nd year with the police bureau, worked as an officer in Zones 4 and 5 “for many years” but was most recently a supervisor in the property room at police headquarters on the North Side, the statement said.
"It is with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of Sergeant Tim Werner. Tim has been a friend to many and a dedicated public servant for the City of Pittsburgh for many years. It's going to be extremely difficult not seeing Tim at Police Headquarters every day. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. He will be truly missed," said Police Chief Scott Schubert.
According to the statement, Sgt. Werner was predeceased by his parents. He “will be dearly missed by his brothers and sisters in the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police.”
Funeral arrangements will be private.
Two other Pittsburgh police officers have died from the virus — Sgt. Richard “Rick” Howe, 51, of Cecil, who died on Oct. 22; and Officer Brian Rowland, 47, who died on Sept. 26.
