Police: Hopewell man drunk, speeding when he caused fatal crash

A driver was drunk and speeding when he caused a head-on collision on Halloween that killed one person in Hopewell, police said.

Caleb B. Kuhns, 23, of Hopewell, was arrested Monday in connection with the Oct. 31 death of Timothy Hundenski, 61, of Hopewell.

Police said Mr. Kuhns’ southbound pickup truck crossed into the northbound lane in the Bucktail Hill section of Brodhead Road around 6:30 p.m.

Mr. Hundenski was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, Donna Hundenski, who was driving, was hospitalized with numerous broken bones.

Hopewell police said Mr. Kuhns smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech. Mr. Kuhns told an officer that he had been drinking but didn’t know where, according to a criminal complaint.

Blood taken from Mr. Kuhns several hours after the crash showed that his blood alcohol content was 0.136. The legal limit for driving in Pennsylvania is 0.08.

Pennsylvania State Police helped with the crash reconstruction. They determined that Mr. Kuhns was going nearly 60 mph in a 35-mph zone, the complaint said.

The inspection sticker on the pickup was expired, Hopewell police said.

Mr. Kuhns is charged with homicide by vehicle while DUI, aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI, involuntary manslaughter, homicide by vehicle, DUI and various vehicle code infractions.

He was arraigned and taken to the Beaver County Jail. Bail was set at $250,000 straight.
