Allegheny County DA's office seeks victims of Berks County company

The Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office believes that it has identified a victim of an alleged theft case involving a benefits administration company in Berks County whose president has been charged with stealing money from the business.

Investigators here are looking for information about other possible victims.

“We believe we have at least one local victim,” Mike Manko, spokesman for Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr., said Wednesday.

The two prosecutors’ offices are working together on the case involving Alternative Benefit Systems in Maidencreek Township, Berks County, and the company’s owner, Amy McLaine.

Ms. McClaine was charged in September by the Bern Township Police Department with theft by failure to make required disposition of funds received and bad checks.

An affidavit of probable cause says that investigators learned of a problem earlier this year when two people with Zee Medical, which subscribes to a health savings account with Alternative Benefit Systems, were unable to cash claim checks from the company for $1,270.37 and $2,700 because ABS stopped payment.

Mr. Manko described Alternative Benefit Systems as a “flexible spending plan administrator” that has since closed.

“Our office believes there may be additional businesses in Allegheny County who have become victims because they are unable to process claims due to this business closing down,” Mr. Manko said.

The DA’s office here is asking businesses and school districts in Allegheny County that have been unable to contact the company about flexible spending plan claims from 2018 to call the office at 412-388-5300.
