Suspect breaks into Henne Jewelers in Shadyside -- but was outsmarted

A burglar smashed the front glass door of the Henne Jewelers store in Pittsburgh’s Shadyside neighborhood overnight, but apparently didn’t know there were no valuables to be stolen.

The owner had posted a sign on the front of the Walnut Street store that says “All merchandise is secured in vault after hours” after burglars robbed the shop about 10 years ago.

City police got a report of the burglary around 3 a.m. Tuesday, according to Allegheny County emergency officials. Video surveillance shows the burglar smash the front door with a crowbar and, realizing there was no jewelry in the display cases, leaves, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette news partner KDKA-TV reported.

The suspect has not been arrested.

In January 2010, an armed robbery took place at the store; then nine days later the jewelry store was again robbed when someone rammed an SUV into the storefront before getting out and taking jewelry from a display case.

Owner John Henne said that before the 2010 incidents, the store had gone 42 years without a major incident.
