A Fayette County man was killed early Sunday in a head-on collision on Interstate 70 in Westmoreland County, authorities said.
The Westmoreland County coroner’s office said in a news release that David J. Ott, 25, of Perryopolis, was pronounced dead at the scene after the wreck just after midnight on I-70 in South Huntingdon.
The coroner’s office said Mr. Ott was driving alone in a Chevrolet Sonic on I-70 eastbound when a Pontiac Vibe driving the wrong way in the eastbound lanes collided with his vehicle.
Mr. Ott, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene just after 1:15 a.m.
The coroner’s news release did not say whether the driver of the Pontiac Vibe was injured, whether the driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle, and whether the driver was detained by police. Nor did it offer any explanation for why the driver was heading the wrong way.
The Belle Vernon barracks of the Pennsylvania State Police is investigating the crash, according to the coroner’s release, but the barracks had not released any information about the crash as of early Sunday afternoon.
