Authorities Tuesday identified the 78-year-old driver whose car they say struck and killed a pedestrian in Carnegie when it jumped a curb and traveled on a sidewalk.
Phillip Milone of Scott was behind the wheel of a 2013 Buick sedan Monday around 4:37 p.m. when his vehicle hit Michelle Gunnell, 47, of Carnegie in the 400 block of East Main Street, Allegheny County Police said.
Ms. Gunnell was taken to St. Clair Hospital in Mt. Lebanon where she died in the emergency room less than an hour later.
Mr. Milone was taken to St. Clair for treatment.
Police said Mr. Milone struck Ms. Gunnell, who had been walking in the same direction.
Ms. Gunnell was thrown into a nearby gas station’s parking lot, police said.
The vehicle crashed into a utility pole.
County police initially said the driver appeared to have suffered a medical event, but investigators backed off that theory Tuesday.
“At this point there’s no evidence of that,” Sgt. Ken Ruckel said, adding that he was not sure where the preliminary information about a medical situation came from.
”At this time, it is unknown why the vehicle was traveling on the sidewalk,” according to a press release.
Investigators have not ruled out the possibility that Mr. Milone suffered some kind of medical emergency. So far, police have not found anything problematic about Mr. Milone in terms of his driver’s license status or vehicle problems.
“I don’t think there’s anything out of the ordinary,” Sgt. Ruckel said.
Homicide detectives and the county police collision reconstruction unit responded to the incident along with Carnegie police.
Police ask anyone with information to call 1-833-ALL-TIPS (1-833-255-8477).
