Four people were taken to area hospitals following a multi-vehicle accident Saturday morning in Mt. Lebanon along a portion of busy Washington Road.
One of the victims sustained serious injuries.
The crash occurred around 8:11 a.m. at Washington and Mt. Lebanon Boulevard and resulted in the entrapment of one vehicle occupant. Police closed the road to traffic in both directions between Mt. Lebanon Boulevard and Terrace Drive until about 12:15 p.m. so investigators could photograph, analyze and measure the scene.
Police said a vehicle heading south on Washington Road “apparently failed to negotiate a curve” after passing Mt. Lebanon Boulevard, crossed a double yellow line and sideswiped another vehicle. That same vehicle crashed head-on into a third vehicle before spinning and striking a fourth vehicle.
The driver that caused the accident had back injuries and was taken to UPMC Presbyterian. The driver and front-seat passenger of the sideswiped vehicle complained of back and leg injuries. They were taken to UPMC Mercy.
The driver of the vehicle that was struck head-on received the most serious injuries, with “major trauma to the lower extremities,” police said. The driver had to be removed from the wreckage by the fire department and was taken to Allegheny General Hospital. The driver of the last vehicle that was struck was not injured.
Police continue to investigate. No decisions have been made on whether to file charges.
