The Butler County Federated Library System said it continues to have technical difficulties after it experienced a ransomware attack on its servers Wednesday.
The brand of ransomware used in the attack — called “Ryuk” — was the same type used against the Onondaga County, N.Y., library system last week.
The library system said it has been in contact with local police and the FBI since the attack was detected.
All library locations remain open during the disruption, but some may change hours and limit the number of items that can be checked out. Some services will also be unavailable, including the public use of computers, renewal of items, collection of fines, placement of holds and the library system’s catalog access.
There is no timeline for when the impacted services will be restored.
Overdrive eBooks and downloadable audio titles will be available to Butler County Library Card holders.
Ransomware is a type of malicious software designed to deny access to a computer system or data until a ransom is paid, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
