On the recommendation of county Solicitor Julie Graham, Butler County commissioners have awarded a contract for the construction management of the new prison.

Hampton

In adopting a 2005 budget last Wednesday, council instituted a $52-per-person emergency and municipal service tax to replace the $10 occupational privilege tax, which is levied on those who work in the township.

Council, in turn, reduced the property tax rate from 2.15 mills to 2 mills.

The $10.4 million budget for 2005 represents an increase of 6 percent over the current $9.8 million.

Manager Chris Lochner said that higher revenues are expected from fees for the new community center, which is set to open in the spring, and additional collection of earned income tax.

Shaler

Township police officers were honored last Wednesday with awards and a banquet for their efforts during the Sept. 17 flooding.

Police Chief Jeffrey Gally and Shaler commissioners presented trophies and commendation ribbons to Officers Jack Reiber, Joe Caldone, Bruce Mion, Keith Zahniser, Rich Fowler, Kevin Kerin, Frank Spiker, Shane Kochanowski and Sean Frank; Lt. Kevin Boyle; Detective Dave Benko; and Detective Rick Byers.

Sgt. Randy Vulakovich presented Gally with an award for exemplary leadership during the crisis.

Others honored were John Kosmack, owner of Kleber Bros. Marine, who assisted in rescues with one of his boats, and Nathan Young, who helped Byers rescue Young's mother, Mildred, after she fell into the flood waters. Mildred Young spoke at the ceremony and thanked Byers for saving her life.

The officers' families and co-workers and flood victims attended the ceremony.
