Mr. Davis suffered from dementia and was legally blind. He was a guard for the Steelers from 1967 to 1979, and was listed as 6-1, 255 pounds during the 1978 season when the team won its third Super Bowl.

Former Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw, during his induction into the Hall of Fame in 1989, told of a dream he had as a kid in which he wanted to play on a championship team. Among the players he asked for on his dream team was Mr. Davis.

“Give me a left guard to trap, trap, trap, and he gave me Sam Davis,” Mr. Bradshaw said.
