Driveways for single-family townhouses built in the city will soon have to be located behind the home.
Pittsburgh City Council on Wednesday gave a nod of approval to the zoning change, likely setting up the measure for final approval next week.
Under the new regulation, developers would need to build off-street parking or garage entrances in the rear of new rowhouses, if rear access is an option. In the case of a corner lot, driveways would need to be located on the side. If neither are accessible, the legislation encourages shared driveways for front-loaded garages.
This is not the first time in recent years that the Peduto administration has tried to reduce sidewalk curb cuts that often accompany new construction townhouses with garages.
In October, the city eliminated the requirement for developers to include an off-street parking space for new single-family dwellings.
The administration introduced the measure in March 2020 as a way to “increase pedestrian safety and lessen reliance on automobiles.”
