It's (finally?) snowing in Pittsburgh, but that won't be the case for long

You heard it was going to snow Friday, and here we are: It’s Friday and it’s snowing.

A weather advisory is in effect, schools are delayed and closed, and the morning commute will take longer than normal.

“This is definitely not a normal winter for this area. This winter has been very strange,” said meteorologist Alicia Miller, of Pittsburgh’s National Weather Service in Moon. “Earlier this week temps were in the 50s, and by the start of next week, things will start warming up again.”

Ava Wargo, 12, and Allie Gujski, 11, both classmates at Ross Elementary School, enjoy a sled ride with their inflatable flamingo on Friday, Feb. 7, 2020, at Hartwood Acres Park in Hampton. North Hills School District and more than 100 others were closed Friday due to snowy weather.

Ms. Miller said temperatures are expected to stay in the 30s throughout the day and will hit the low 20s Friday night. In addition to the 2-4 inches that blanketed the region early Friday morning, another half inch to an inch of snowfall should be expected for the rest of the day — mainly in mountainous areas out east, she said.

The heaviest snow fall will ease over the next few hours, although light showers will come and go until Friday night, Ms. Miller said.

But this weekend will see a turn of events.

“It may be kind of wet, with a snow-rain mix tomorrow afternoon,” Ms. Miller said. “We warm back up at the start of next week. Sunday we’ll be back in the 40s and Monday we might even see the 50s with a chance of rain again.”

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for the region, affecting parts of Western Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia, from midnight through 1 p.m. Friday.

As of 7 a.m., the National Weather Service said it measured 3 inches of snowfall at its Moon office. Follow the snow using the Allegheny Snow Plow Tracker App

Pittsburgh Public Schools is among more than 100 districts closed or delayed Friday.

Several accidents caused delays during morning rush hour. PennDOT reduced the speed limit to 45 mph on the Beaver Valley Expressway in Beaver and Lawrence counties and I-80 in Butler, Clarion and Jefferson counties.
