Pittsburgh planning director Gastil leaving for CMU post

Pittsburgh’s planning director, Raymond Gastil, is leaving city government for a teaching position at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Architecture, city officials announced Friday.

Mr. Gastil will lead CMU’s Remaking Cities Institute as the David Lewis Director of Urban Design and Regional Engagement. He will also teach architecture and urban design. He begins Sept. 1 in his new post.

Mr. Gastil has worked as planning director for the city since 2014.

Mayor Bill Peduto’s office said the city will conduct a national search to replace Mr. Gastil.

“Ray’s time here in Pittsburgh has coincided with a time of major redevelopment around Pittsburgh, as we changed from a city managing decline to one managing growth,” Mr. Peduto said in a statement. “That presented us with both opportunities and challenges, and Ray was the perfect person to help guide us through that transition.”

He has previously taught at Penn State University and the University of California, Berkeley.
