Pittsburgh's First Night events come with Downtown road closures, parking restrictions

Navigating in Downtown Pittsburgh can be tricky any day of the week, but on New Year’s Eve, even the best GPS will have a hard time with the maze of road closures.

To help revelers prepare, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has listed street and parking lot closures for the 25th anniversary Silver Jubilee celebration of Highmark First Night Pittsburgh, which kicks off at 6 p.m. Monday.

The road closures, however, start hours earlier. First Night celebrations cover 14 Downtown blocks and take over the Cultural District for approximately six hours. The following are the planned closures for First Night (additional information is at TrustArts.org/FirstNightPGH and ParkPGH.org):

● Penn Avenue from Stanwix Street to Sixth Street will be closed starting at 10 a.m. Monday. Starting at noon, Penn Avenue will be closed from Stanwix Street to 10th Street.

The 25th annual First Night Pittsburgh will ring in the new year Downtown on Sunday.

● 10th Street will be closed from Fort Duquesne Boulevard to Penn Avenue for the duration of the Highmark First Night Pittsburgh Parade, starting at 7:30 p.m. Sixth Street will be closed from 8-8:45 p.m. for the parade, but will otherwise remain open throughout the event.

● Stanwix Street from Liberty Avenue to Fort Duquesne Boulevard will be closed at 10 a.m. Monday through 2 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1

● 11 Stanwix Street Garage, operated by Alco Parking Corporation, can only be accessed from the garage’s Fort Duquesne Boulevard entrance.

● EQT Plaza garage will be closed and inaccessible from 4 p.m. Monday through 2 a.m. Tuesday.

● Sixth & Penn Garage at 542 Penn Ave., will be closed and inaccessible from 4 p.m. Monday through 2 a.m. Tuesday.

● Fifth Avenue Extension will be closed from Fifth Avenue Place to Fort Duquesne Boulevard. (Fifth Avenue Place Parking garage remains accessible from Liberty Avenue.)

● Seventh Street will be closed from Liberty Avenue to the entrance of Theater Square Parking Garage, which is accessible only from Fort Duquesne Boulevard.

● Maddock Place will be closed from Penn Avenue to Fort Duquesne Boulevard.

● Eighth Street will be closed from Liberty Avenue to Fort Duquesne Boulevard (parking lot accessible only from Fort Duquesne Boulevard).

● Ninth Street will be closed from Liberty Avenue to the Ninth and Penn Garage (accessible only from Fort Duquesne Boulevard).

● Garrison Place will be closed from Exchange Way to French Way (parking accessible only from Fort Duquesne Boulevard).

● Exchange Way will be closed from Garrison Place to Eighth Street (parking accessible only from 10th Street).

● Uber/Pittsburgh transportation drop-off and pickup points will be at the following intersections in the Downtown Cultural District, 10 a.m Monday until 2 a.m. Tuesday: Liberty Avenue at Stanwix Street, Sixth Street, Tito Way and 10th Street; and Fort Duquesne Boulevard at Sixth and Ninth streets.
