A Night at the Kentucky Derby was the theme for Three Rivers Youth’s Nellie Leadership Awards at the Wyndham Grand, Downtown, Friday night. More than 250 guests wearing all manner of hats helped raise nearly $120,000 for TRY.
“This event is an awesome gathering of many community leaders, partners and people who work with us throughout the year,” said CEO Peggy Harris (with her husband, Cordell).
“Three Rivers Youth has a track record of helping young moms and their young children whether it is social or drugs or economics, whatever it might be, and this is the type of organization we need to uplift every day,” said Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey.
Recipients of Nellie Awards were Sharon McDaniel, Judge Kim Berkeley Clark, who was unable to attend, and Tracey McCants Lewis.
“These are women of courage and excellence,” said Harris.
Also recognized at the event was the Pittsburgh Penguins for sports excellence and contributions to the community through charitable endeavors. The Chuck and Nancy Adreon Scholarship was presented to Kajha Mack of California University of Pennsylvania.
This party began with dinner and the awards presentations, followed by a procession of hats and a toast to the derby by emcee Debbie Norrell. Then there were games and races and a dessert reception in the adjoining room.
Enjoying the fun were event chair Marcia Martin, board vice chair Dr. Margaret Larkins-Pettigrew, Betsy and John Sabatos, Rev. Linda Wilson, Kristin Walker, Roseanne Wholey, Jackie Dixon and event coordinator Winifred Torbert.
