Sandcastle will have a new look, new slide and special events in 2022

Sandcastle Waterpark will offer more splash for the buck this season.

The Homestead park has announced a multi-million dollar improvement plan along with a new waterslide, an expanded operating calendar and series of special events.

Among the improvements to Sandcastle, which opens May 21:

Bombs Away: On the park’s new free-fall body slide, located on the same tower as the Lighting Express, riders will step into an enclosed launch capsule and when the countdown hits zero, the floor suddenly vanishes, propelling riders 26 feet per second down 300 feet.

Among Kennywood's renovations for the 2022 season: Fresh paint for the Phantom's Revenge roller coaster.

Mon Tsunami Wave Pool: A new stone facade will create an illusion of rocky cliffs, while a new waterfall feature cascades below during wave sequences.

The Boardwalk: A steel archway with illuminated, dimensional lettering marks the new start of the Boardwalk, and light posts have been updated to gooseneck lighting, while string lights illuminate the evening pathways.

Food & Beverage: There will be new items on the menu and new signage for the booth.

Mushroom Pool: Sandcastle has added a new painted mural along the pool’s back wall.

Sandbox: An all-new 2,000 square foot play place will be available right off the boardwalk.

Cocomo Joe’s and Sandbar: These two walk-up bar locations get new, vibrant colors and textures.

Park landscaping: New foliage, flowers, and ornamental grass can be found in and surrounding the park.

Idlewild and SoakZone amusement parks are opening earlier in 2022 than usual.

Waterslides: The waterslides will be completely repainted using “a relaxing color palette reminiscent of summertime on the East Coast.”

“Guests will be stunned when they see the all-new look of our world-class water park this year,” Ricky Spicuzza, Sandcastle’s Assistant General Manager said in a statement. “This began last season with the improvements to the park’s appearance, new food and beverage offerings, and new Jammin’ July special event. We are now building upon those successful changes this year and offering a brand-new Sandcastle experience unlike anything the Steel City has ever seen before.”

Here is the calendar of special events:

June 4-26: Daily operations kick off with Out of School, Into the Pool!, with scavenger hunts, balloon artists, ice cream eating contests, and popular TV show characters.

July 1-31: Jammin’ July returns for another season, featuring a local entertainment lineup. The Independence Day holiday weekend will include an antique car show and visits by Uncle Sam and the Statue of Liberty;

Aug. 5-Sept. 17: The Food And Cocktail Frenzy will feature local breweries, food trucks, DJs and more on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Aug. 26-Sept. 16: Paying homage to the old Sandbar from the 90’s, nightlife returns to Sandcastle for Friday Night Swim Under the Lights, an all-new event where guests can swim under the stars and enjoy a late-night beverage.

Also, for a limited time, the Gold Season Pass, which offers unlimited admission, free parking and a souvenir cup with unlimited free refills, is available for the same price as the Silver Pass.
