Fishing Report: North Park Lake to be stocked; Erie streams stained

Lake Erie tributaries (Erie County) Good numbers of steelhead were visible on westside streams. Elk Creek was stained with a good flow Thursday, conditions conducive to dead drifting egg sacs, spinners and jigs as well as egg patterns and Wooly Buggers. Before heading north on I-79, check the weather and water gauges. Rising streams following rain were expected to result in ideal steelheading early Saturday. Temperatures could reach the mid-60s by midmorning, but fly anglers should note that southwest winds could gust to more than 50 mph. Continued showers throughout Saturday could prolong the run or result in blowouts on smaller streams, particularly east of the peninsula. Partly cloudy skies and temperatures up to 43 degrees forecast for Sunday.

Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County) Yellow perch and crappies were caught at the Linesville and Jamestown marinas. The state has begun releasing water to attain winter pool level.

Woodcock Creek Lake (Crawford County) Anglers reported catches of walleye, smallmouth bass and panfish in the lake. Muskies continued to be taken below the dam.

Cascade Quarry (Lawrence County) Following an October stocking, anglers caught trout on small rubber worms in white, green-white or black and lime-green.

Bessemer Lake (Lawrence County) Fish and Boat was expected to stock rainbow trout Tuesday.

North Park Lake (Allegheny County) Fish and Boat is expected to arrive Tuesday with a big stocking of rainbow trout, including some former hatchery breeders. The trucks arrive at 1:15 p.m. at the juncture of Pearce Mill Road and Babcock Boulevard.

Monongahela River (Allegheny County) Anglers caught walleye below Lock 3 at Elizabeth.

Twin Lakes (Westmoreland County) The lower lake was drawn down for maintenance. No word about whether it would be back up in time for ice fishing, weather permitting.

Youghiogheny River (Westmoreland County) Fish and Boat reported good clarity and water temperature. Good-sized muskellunge were caught off Smithton and at Cedar Creek Park.

Canonsburg, Dutch Fork lakes (Washington County) Live baits and scented pastes attracted trout.

Monongahela River (Washington, Greene counties) Walleye were taken below Lock 4 at Charleroi. Anglers caught muskellunge and walleye off Pumpkin Run Park at Rice’s Landing.

Laurel Hill Creek (Somerset County) Spin anglers throwing blue-silver spoons reported good trout fishing in the upper and lower Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only areas. Fly anglers did well with mop flies.

Fishing Report will return Jan. 7.
