Walleye limits taken in Lake Erie

Lake Erie (Erie County) Walleye limits were taken in 20-80 feet of water with crawler harnesses and crank baits being the hot lures. Despite rough morning waters off Walnut Creek July 24, four anglers marked ’eyes at 41-48 feet and limited out on crawlers by 5:30 p.m. Evening anglers took walleye at Elk Creek off the wall. The Perch Pirate head boat stayed close to The Point, finding good numbers of walleye and jumbo perch together at 43-50 feet over The Dump. A passenger reported spotty perch fishing but several slabs brought over the rail of the Edward John head boat. Just over the New York line a party of three limited out on walleye and lake trout in four hours during a God’s Grace Sport Fishing charter.

Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County) Persistent rain hampered the bite, but a few walleye were taken trolling crawlers off vegetation.

Lake Wilhelm (Crawford County) Few anglers fished in cloudy water but some crappies were caught.

Canadohta Lake (Crawford County) Walleye and Northern pike took crank baits and crawler harnesses.

Shenango Reservoir (Mercer County) In waters regulated under the Panfish Enhancement program, bluegills were taken at about 10 feet and crappies in the 11-inch range were deeper.

Kinzua Reservoir (Warren County) A 48-inch muskellunge took a trolling crank bait and was released. Walleye went for tipped jigs and spinners in Sugar Bay.

Allegheny River (Warren County) Anglers picked off smallmouth bass off Betts Park using soft plastics, spinners and topwater lures.

Bessemer Lake (Lawrence County) Largemouths went for worms, minnows and soft plastics in blue or purple.

Allegheny River (Allegheny County) Sylvia Reeder’s first-ever fish was a 17-inch freshwater drum caught on a worm by the 4-year-old from Crafton during Venture Outdoors’ Tri-Anglers program on the North Shore Wednesday. The Tri-Anglers session, held on the wharf under the Clemente Bridge, also produced two channel cats: a 20-incher that took a hot dog fished by Frank McCormick of McKees Rocks, and an 18-inch cat that went for a shrimp rigged by Aubriee Stratton, 14, of the North Side. Learn more about TriAnglers at 412-255-0564, ventureoutdoors.org.

Ohio River (Allegheny River) Steven Balko of Bellevue released a 36-inch flathead that took a scored bluegill at dusk in the Emsworth Lock and Dam tailrace.

Youghiogheny River (Allegheny County) Waters were still high and muddy from McKeesport to the Somerset-Fayette county dam, where unseasonably large water releases continued.

North Park Lake (Allegheny County) Despite the heat, kids caught catfish during the state Fish and Boat Commission’s Southwest Region Mentored Youth Catfish Opportunity July 20-21.  Among those who caught fish were Ronan Karavlan, 9, and brother Logan, 11, of McCandless who together took seven cats on worms, while sister Rose, 9, landed her first catfish, a 14-incher.

Cross Creek Lake (Washington County) An angler reported five slab crappies caught on tipped jigs under bobbers at 10-15 feet.

Cranberry Glade Lake (Somerset County) A kayak angler released three largemouths in the 16-inch range taken on spinnerbaits pulled through weedbeds.
