Inside Out: Located just 13 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, Harmar Township was named after Ebenezer Denny's son, Harmar. Ebenezer Denny was a solder during the Revolutionary War whose personal journal carried one of the most well-documented accounts of the surrender of the British at the siege of Yorktown. He later served as the first mayor of Pittsburgh from 1816 to 1817. Harmar Denny became a lawyer and served as a member of Congress from 1829 to 1837. He is buried in Allegheny Cemetery in Lawrenceville.
Harmar is home to Allegheny Islands State Park, made from three undeveloped islands in the middle of the Allegheny River. The 5.86-square-mile township was mostly home to many coal mines. Its four municipal parks have paved walking paths, play structures and ballfields.
The township's population is 2,921 and the median family income is $50,054.
