From 2 to 6 p.m. this Sunday, March 29, the Empty Bowls fundraiser will be held at Rodef Shalom Congregation in Oakland, celebrating its 20th year. Jointly benefiting nonprofits the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank and Just Harvest, the fundraiser focuses attention and raises money to assist to those who suffer from food insecurity and hunger.
For a $22 contribution (paid in advance or at the door) guests receive a handcrafted bowl and partake in a simple meal of soup and bread. Soups are contributed by area chefs and restaurants, with about 30 participating. This year, to celebrate the anniversary, Bill Fuller, executive chef of Big Burrito, is simmering up something special, inspired by a favorite children’s tale, “Stone Soup.” He said the story “teaches children about sharing, working together and utilizing resources to come together as a group.” No hints as to what’s in the soup, but recipe cards will be available at the event.
Soups will be ladled up by local celebrities, including Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto. Activities are planned for children, revolving around a vegetable theme, including making produce prints and fashioning vegetable cutouts from tissue and contact paper. Besides politely slurping their soups, attendees can check out the bake sale and peruse a silent auction of fine art and bowls autographed by celebrities.
Rodef Shalom is at 4905 Fifth Ave. For tickets, go to pittsburghfoodbank.org or justharvest.org or call 412-431-8960. They also may be purchased at the door the day of the event.
