Straub Brewery in St. Mary’s reached back to its beginnings in the 1870s to name its newest beverage, Sabina’s Wild Berry Sangria Spritzer.
Named for the great-great-grandmother of the family-run brewery’s President and CEO Bill Brock, Sabina Sorg, the drink isn’t based on beer or malt but rather is a “fermented fruit beverage,” made with the juices of red and white grapes, apples, raspberries and elderberries.
The ingredients list reads, “Carbonated water, fruit juice concentrates, sugar, citric acid, natural color and flavors.”
It’s 5% alcohol by volume, 80 calories per 6-ounce (half bottle) serving. And while it sounds summery, and on trend with the boom in hard flavored seltzers, it’s to be available year-round. Suggested retail price is $9-$10 for a four-pack of 12-ounce bottles at many of the region’s distributors and beer stores.
My wife, who is all about the no- and low-alcohol drinks right now, enjoyed what she described as sweet “fizzy sangria” one hot night after chilling it in the freezer to the consistency of a slushy.
