Lent kicks off on Ash Wednesday and for the next six weeks, seafood lovers across the region will be heading to their favorite local fish fry.
GO FISH By our count, there are at least 80 to choose from at churches, schools, volunteer fire companies and fraternal and cultural organizations, where volunteers roll up their sleeves to dish out untold quantities of fried and baked fish, pierogies, haluski and all the other much-loved sides as fundraisers.
Last year, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic meant some places offered their sandwiches and dinners only via drive-through or takeout. Most are back with dine-in events this season and some even have expanded hours. Due to rising food costs, you’ll probably have to pay a little more than in 2022, but at least the region’s cod supply is strong.
And if you’re tired of the same old, same old or just want to expand your culinary horizons, a handful of churches are upping the ante with salmon, homemade soups, fish or shrimp tacos, pasta dishes and even lobster rolls and bisque. They’re also throwing the proverbial bone to kids with applesauce and cheese pizza.
