The French bistro trend has hit the suburbs: Bertrand has opened in Scott near the Mt. Lebanon border, a BYOB-spot with a menu of escargot, vichyssoise and coq au vin.
The 38-seat restaurant opened at 1910 Cochran Road in the space that used to be Arpino in the Manor Oak Plaza. It also features a 20-seat patio and a cocktail lounge for which you bring the booze and the bar offers tonic and garnishes. Corkage is $8.
Vincent Meredith is the executive chef who’s been with owner Louis Bucci for the past eight years, when he was running Tartine in the West End. He has put together a dinner menu of starters from $12 to $15, like snails or shrimp cocktail. Dinner ranges from $26 to $28, with dishes like poulet a l’orange and steak au poivre. Lunch, with quiche, salads and larger items like beef bourguignon, ranges from $9 to $14.
The restaurant is named for owner Lou Bucci’s dog Bertrand, an homage to French restaurateur Bertrand Hug, who owned Mille Fleurs and Mister A’s in the San Diego area. He’s been a friend of Mr. Bucci’s for the past 40 years.
Pittsburgh native Mr. Bucci, who’s in his 70s, has seen the rise and fall of more than 44 restaurants — in gentrifying neighborhoods to prime locations — from San Diego to Denver to New Hampshire ski towns. He was the founder of The Starring Roll, which he sold before it became the national chain Quizno's.
Lunch is served from Tuesday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dinner is from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday and 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday; The restaurant is closed Sundays and Mondays.
