Checkers & Rally's plans to open 24 restaurants in Pittsburgh. Should they?

Pittsburghers could see quite a few more fast-food franchises dotting the landscape in the near future. Tampa-based Checkers & Rally’s Restaurants Inc. is looking to add up to 24 new locations within the area.

This isn’t their first time in the area, though. A Rally’s previously resided in Pittsburgh before it closed its doors for good.

While there are 22 locations in Pennsylvania, most of them remain within the Philadelphia area. The restaurant team is hoping to add 76 new locations across the country this year and another hundred in 2019. The announcement made Thursday called for franchisers to fund the new eateries.

Official opening dates and locations have yet to be announced.

The Pittsburgh restaurant industry has seen substantial growth over the past few years. In 2015, Zagat named Pittsburgh the “No. 1 Food City” in the country. Over 30 new restaurants opened in the Downtown area alone from January 2017 to May 2018, according to a study released by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership. Over 300 restaurants currently reside Downtown, with over 60 percent considered “small businesses.”

Other national chains like McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, Chick-fil-A and more already hold a number of locations within city limits.

Do locals want another fast food chain in a city of such diverse meal selection or will it go under like the previous Rally’s here before?
