Sitting on a tree-lined street not far from the campus of Washington and Jefferson University is a row of Victorian homes with fancy gingerbread trim, cylindrical turrets and steep gabled roofs. The district, between East Beau Street and South Wade Avenue in East Washington, Pa., is known for its rich concentration of Queen Anne, Shingle-style and Colonial Revival homes.
One of them, a Queen Anne-style Victorian at 348 E Beau St., is on the market for $270,000 and listed with Nicole Malesic of Realty ONE Group Gold Standard-McMurray (724-554-3548 or realtyonegroupgoldstandard.com).
The exterior only hints at what’s to come inside. The house’s 2,628 square feet of living space is all about decoration, from the multiple turrets and original woodwork to the ornate front porch with dentil trim, upper and lower railings and three porch posts at the corners. There is nothing shy about this Victorian home; it shouts, “Look at me.”
Open the front door and you are transported back in time. To the one side, there is a large stained-glass window, and ahead is a dark-stained wood staircase. Halfway up the stairs is a landing with two large stained-glass windows.
Tall pocket doors lead to the generous living room, whose imposing fireplace features original tile framed by pilasters. Above the decorative frieze and mantel is a wide mirror topped with a decorative shelf and dentil trim.
Like many of the rooms in the house, the living room is not a perfect rectangle, thanks to the turret at the front of the house. Three windows curve around that corner of the room, letting in lots of natural light.
Another pair of pocket doors leads to the formal dining room with another fireplace. The adjacent pantry has built-in shelving with nine drawers below and there is a powder room.
Beyond the pantry is the kitchen, which is meant for a large family or someone who enjoys entertaining. A wall of cupboards offers lots of storage and appliances include an electric stove, an over-the-range microwave with hood vent, dishwasher and refrigerator. There are back stairs leading from the kitchen to the second floor.
The master bedroom has a roomy walk-in closet and a bathroom with a walk-in shower. A turret creates a nook with three large windows.
“Currently the house is set up as four bedrooms but could easily be six,” Malesic said.
The smaller second bedroom has its own fireplace and two large windows in a corner that would be perfect for a reading nook or a work from home space.
Another bedroom is currently set up as a second living room/laundry room and has a sitting room of its own.
The third floor offers space for expansion and a rather interesting shape created by the roof’s gables and curved turrets. This is where you will find two more large bedrooms and another that could be a third bedroom.
The basement, while not finished, offers great storage. There is central air-conditioning but some of the upper rooms currently use window units.
Off the kitchen is the back porch. One side is screened with lattice and the porch looks out into a flat backyard and a pergola.
The driveway ends in a large parking area with room for three, possibly four cars. On the other side of the house is a large green space, not part of the property, but with mature trees that create a park-like setting.
The asphalt shingle roof is new, according to the current owner, Wolfe Yetter Property.
The Washington County property’s assessment is $160,900 and taxes paid for 2022 were $3,272.
