Wabtec to buy Swedish rail parts firm for $960 million

North Shore-based rail tech company Wabtec Corp. announced its second major acquisition of the year on Tuesday, with an agreement to buy a Swedish firm for $960 million.

Dellner Couplers, which has 1,200 employees and facilities in 13 countries, makes train connection systems — couplers and gangways.

This follows Wabtec’s announcement in January of a $1.78 billion deal to buy the Inspection Technologies division of Evident. The deal, expected to close in the first half of the year, would add non-destructive testing, remote inspection and analysis capabilities to Wabtec’s freight business.

Dellner will be added to Wabtec’s transit segment, which provides products and services to agencies that operate passenger rail trains.

North Shore-based Wabtec, a rail technology company, says it has acquired another long-time Pittsburgh firm, Bloom Engineering Inc., for $69 million.

That segment accounted for 18% of Wabtec’s sales last year, according to the company’s annual report. The other 72% came from the freight business.

Last year, Wabtec spent $168 million on four acquisitions — two in the transit segment and two in freight. This included the purchase of Pittsburgh-based Bloom Engineering, a provider of industrial heating applications for $69 million.

Wabtec has 29,500 workers across the globe.
