Pittsburgh’s tech labor force continues to grow at a faster rate than in other small markets, according to the latest research from CBRE Group Inc., a Los Angeles-based commercial real estate company.
Between 2016 and 2017, tech employment grew 13.8 percent in the city — a pace that places Pittsburgh fifth on a list of 50 “momentum markets” where job growth has accelerated more quickly in the past two years than in the prior two years.
The city ranks behind Ottawa, Ontario; Los Angeles, California; Madison, Wisconsin and Orange County, California. Last year, Pittsburgh was ranked in eighth place.
Backed by a healthy higher education ecosystem that includes Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh, the city also placed fourth for highest concentration of millennials, coming in at 23.5 percent of the urban population. The national average is 13.9 percent.
Pittsburgh remains an attractive destination for tech firms due to its relatively low cost of living and high quality of graduating students, reports CBRE.
Other key findings:
- Tech jobs represent 3.9 percent of the labor market.
- The average wage for a tech worker in Pittsburgh is $83,100.
- Over the last five years, the tech labor pool has grown 21.2 percent.
