Budget airline company Spirit Airlines will resume seasonal flights from Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Latrobe to Myrtle Beach, S.C., following concerns that the airline would shutter the service after it filed for bankruptcy in November.
Spirit’s Myrtle Beach flights will be available daily beginning on May 7, said Westmoreland County Airport Authority Executive Director Gabe Monzo. The flights, which began around 10 years ago, have historically started as early as February and ended as late as November, he said.
Mr. Monzo reaffirmed that his airport would continue supporting Spirit, which is its only commercial airline carrier.
“With the reinstatement of Myrtle, we are hoping for bigger and better things,” he said. “They're moving through bankruptcy right now, and whatever decision they make, we're going to be there for them when they come out of it.”
In addition to the reinstated Myrtle Beach flights, Spirit also offers year-round flights from Latrobe to Orlando. The Orlando flight’s service has not been disrupted during the bankruptcy news, said Mr. Monzo.
Mr. Monzo praised Pittsburgh International Airport’s expansive service, but said that Arnold Palmer Regional Airport’s sunny destination options and free parking could draw in extra passengers over the summer.
“That’s quite the initiative for people to come here … you save a hundred bucks as soon as you pull in the parking lot,” he said.
