Former Pittsburgh Post-Gazette editorial cartoonist Rob Rogers has found a new home locally for his drawings.
Pittsburgh Current, a new alternative monthly, announced Thursday that it would run Mr. Rogers’ cartoons.
The Current said an agreement has been reached with Mr. Rogers’ syndication group, Andrews McMeel Universal, for the news outlet to begin sharing Mr. Rogers’ cartoons online Monday, “and for inclusion in all future print issues.”
The Post-Gazette on June 14 fired Mr. Rogers, who had worked for the paper for 25 years, after killing 19 of his cartoons or preliminary ideas since March, including some featuring President Donald Trump.
Mr. Rogers said his work did not appear because his editor disagreed with his anti-Trump cartoons.
Keith Burris, editorial director, has said that Mr. Rogers wanted to be the “sole arbiter” of his work. Mr. Burris said he found it difficult to collaborate with the cartoonist.
The firing ignited an outpouring of local and national criticism of the Post-Gazette.
“Rob Rogers is one of the most important voices in the Pittsburgh media landscape. I couldn’t imagine a Pittsburgh publication not carrying his cartoons,” said Pittsburgh Current Editor Charlie Deitch.
Mr. Deitch, former editor of the Pittsburgh City Paper, was fired from that alternative newsweekly after refusing to back down from covering a local politician.
Correction, posted June 22, 2018: An earlier version of this story misstated how often the Pittsburgh Current publishes. It is a monthly publication.
