Walmart to close Waterworks Mall store in the coming weeks

Walmart announced it is closing its store at The Waterworks Mall on Freeport Road by Nov. 11.

The retailer said it made the decision after reviewing the past and present financial performance of the store, which has been an anchor at the shopping mall for years. The 187 employees who work there will be offered a transfer to another Walmart location, the company said.

Arkansas-based Walmart Inc. is among the region’s largest employers, with 12,000 workers in southwestern Pennsylvania, according to the Post-Gazette’s 2022 Largest Employers List. That number also includes those who work at Sam’s Club, which Walmart owns.

Statewide, there are 160 Walmart and Sam’s Club locations.

“We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at our Pittsburgh location,” Felicia McCranie, director of corporate affairs and global communications said in a statement. “We look forward to serving them at our other stores in the surrounding communities and on walmart.com.”
