A Mercer County hospital is preparing to reopen Tuesday, two months after closing in bankruptcy and being acquired by a California company.
Gov. Josh Shapiro announced Friday that Sharon Regional Medical Center has been given the green light to reopen, pending the transfer of the hospital license to new owners, Tenor Health Foundation Sharon LLC, which has corporate offices in Pasadena. The hospital closed Jan. 6 as part of the financial restructuring of corporate parent Steward Health System of Dallas.
“Dedicated department of health staff have spent extensive time and energy, working hundreds of hours, seven days a week to make certain that the hospital is in substantial compliance with regulatory standards, the state secretary of health, Debra Bogen, said in a prepared statement Friday.
Tenor officials were not available Saturday, but station WKBN in Youngstown, Ohio, reported Tuesday’s hospital opening and also an open house from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Morrison Hall, the hospital’s former school of nursing.
Sharon Regional will reopen as a nonprofit facility for the first time since 2014, when it was acquired by for-profit owners. The hospital is licensed for 163 beds, but patient census has been much lower in recent years.
