Health insurance and hospital conglomerate Highmark Health laid off 118 employees across the enterprise Wednesday, bringing the total number of staff reductions this year to 259.
A small number of managers were also affected, spokeswoman Lynn Seay said in an email. At the same time, Highmark hired more than 3,050 new employees this year.
“As we implement these difficult but necessary changes, Highmark Health will continue to invest strategically in growth, new markets and reinventing health to fulfill our mission of delivering a remarkable health experience,” she said in a statement.
Downtown-based Highmark Health, which has operations in four states, employs more than 37,000 people, while subsidiaries sell Blue Cross Blue Shield-branded products and operate hospitals. Highmark Health is also the corporate parent of Allegheny Health Network, a 14-hospital system.
