Allegheny General Hospital is proposing to build three new towers on its North Side campus over the next 10 years, the hospital revealed in its Hospital Institutional Master Plan.
The massive expansion plan will be discussed during a public hearing at the Pittsburgh Planning Commission’s June 3 meeting.
The proposed Sandusky Tower, at East North Avenue and Sandusky Street, would build upon the existing AGH Academic Cancer Center, bringing it from two to 12 stories. The master plan says existing parking structures on Sandusky would be demolished to make room for the expansion.
The hospital’s helipad, currently at the proposed Sandusky Tower site, would be temporarily relocated to Snyder Tower during construction and then return to the rooftop of the new Sandusky Tower.
The James E North Ave Tower, at East North Avenue and James Street, would include construction of a nine story structure that would take the place of two business-based structures.
The Hemlock Tower, at the corner of James and Hemlock streets, would include an eight-story structure that would span over Hemlock Street. Structures over existing roadways require Art Commission review and approval, and an Encroachment Permit, the plan notes.
“The Hemlock Tower, James E North Tower, and Sandusky Tower developments will all be medical in nature,” the master plan reads. “Structures included in the ten-year development envelope will be subject to applicable City of Pittsburgh Residential Compatibility Standards.”
