Former UPMC president and CEO Jeffrey Romoff received $10.4 million in total compensation in 2020, the most recent data available, according to a new Internal Revenue Service filing.
Mr. Romoff’s 2020 salary represented a 9.6% raise from the same 12 months in 2019.
Including Mr. Romoff, the total compensation for a dozen UPMC employees exceeded $2 million; 28 other employees received more than $1 million in salary and benefits.
After Mr. Romoff, the highest compensated UPMC employees were oncologist Stanley Marks, $3.2 million; organ transplant surgeon Abhinav Humar, $3.1 million; Diane Holder, president, UPMC Insurance Division, $3.1 million; and former chief medical officer Steven D. Shapiro, $3 million. Dr. Shapiro left the system for another position at the University of Southern California in May.
In July 2021, Mr. Romoff, 75, was replaced by Leslie Davis, who received $2.4 million in total compensation in 2020 in her role as senior vice president and COO of UPMC’s Health Services Division.
UPMC on Friday released its IRS Form 990, which is required to be filed with the government annually and lists the top executive salaries for the nonprofit health care giant. Executive salaries were for calendar year 2020 in the 2021 filing released Friday, as required by the IRS.
UPMC, a $24 billion integrated hospital and health insurance giant, employs some 92,000 people and operates 40 hospitals, including many in Pennsylvania.
Like UPMC, Highmark operates a hospital network and health insurance business. The salary for Highmark Health President and CEO David Holmberg dipped 4% to $7.82 million in 2019, the most recent data available, reflecting a decrease in bonus and incentive compensation, according to Highmark’s IRS filing.
