WVU Medicine Uniontown Hospital is reopening its maternity unit, which has been shuttered since 2019.
Work is underway to relaunch obstetrics care in September, according to hospital President and CEO David Hess.
“Reintroducing this service to our community gives our patients world class care close to home and makes good on our promise to bring key services to the people of southwestern Pennsylvania,” Dr. Hess said in a prepared statement.
The 13-bed Family Beginnings Birthing Center at Uniontown Hospital closed after the hospital’s partnership with UPMC ended after substantial financial investment. In 2020, the hospital affiliated with Morgantown-based WVU Medicine, and last fall WVU Children’s and WVU Medicine Uniontown Hospital entered into an affiliation to serve mothers in Fayette and Greene counties.
Since the hospital unit was closed, pregnant women have been referred to WVU Medicine doctors in Morgantown, W.Va., UPMC Magee-Women’s Hospital and Allegheny Health Network’s Jefferson Hospital.
